The January 2021 NYMEX natural gas contract settled at $2.467/MMBtu.
Even though the January 2021 NYMEX natural gas contract is a relatively low settlement price when compared to settlement prices over the last 10 years, you can see that the January 2021 NYMEX settlement price is one of the higher settlement prices over the past 12 months (see slide 3). As an example, the July 2020 NYMEX natural gas settlement price was as low as $1.495/MMBtu.
As of 1:00 p.m. EST today, the February 2020 NYMEX natural gas contract is trading at $2.705/MMBtu, which is up $0.124 cents for yesterday’s settle. All natural gas contracts starting from February 2020 through January 2023 are trading up between $0.01 cent to $0.12 cents.
Over the past 2 trading sessions, prices have risen 7%, which is the largest two-day gain in six weeks. The forecasts for cooler temperatures over the next couple of weeks which means an increase in demand is driving up prices.
